Vox Populi, Vox Europae ? Über Volksabstimmungen auf EU-Ebene

Überall in Europa wollen Menschen ihre politischen Überzeugungen wirksam vertreten. Das Instrument des Referendums wird dabei, so scheint es, besonders von Bürgern und Regierungen unterstützt, die die EU-Institutionen skeptisch sehen.

Demand #1 - Ever Closer Union

One of David Cameron’s conditions in his letter to Donald Tusk last week is an opting out from the clause “Ever Closer Union”. This implies a formal disengagement of the UK from participating in the integration process and on the other hand that the country wants an “à la carte” relationship with the rest of the EU without any formal obligation to participate in the European Project as leading towards a political Union.

Vox Populi, Vox Europae ? Why we need a common European legislation on referenda and why we need EU level referenda.

This year has been particularly challenging for democracy in the EU. Surely the Referendum in Greece on 5th of July regarding the Memorandum Agreement has been the highest point of this difficult year, which is going to end with another challenge. Some weeks ago a Dutch Eurosceptic platform managed to achieve enough signatures to trigger an advisory referendum on the EU-Ukraine.

The outcome of the General Elections 2015 gives us the picture of a Disunited Kingdom. A yellow-coloured Scotland is bordering a blue-coloured England, with the exception of most of the urban constituencies, in which Labour prevailed.
