Who needs the European Council?

Juuso Järviniemi argues that with a change of political culture, the European Council could be effectively abolished within existing structures. This would be made through a shift to more democratic and accountable decision-making.

Finnland - Leuchtturm in Sachen Meinungsfreiheit?

Finnlands hohes Maß an Meinungsfreiheit ist etwas, worauf das nordische Land stolz ist. Doch mit der bizarren Fehde zwischen dem Premierminister und dem öffentlich-rechtlichen Sender YLE ist Finnlands internationaler Ruf in dieser Hinsicht in Frage gestellt worden. Gerade wegen des Aufschreis, argumentiert unsere Autorin Juuso Järviniemi, dass Finnland noch etwas richtigmacht.

Entretien avec Andrew Duff

Andrew Duff est peut-être le plus important des fédéralistes européens nous venant du Royaume Uni. Il a représenté les libéraux démocrates au sein du groupe ALDE au Parlement européen pendant 15 ans, de 1999 à 2014. Il a aussi été le président de l’Union des Fédéralistes Européens entre 2008 et 2013. Il travaille maintenant pour l’European Policy Centre et surveille attentivement l’évolution de la situation autour du Brexit. L’équipe du New Federalist lui a demandé ce qu’il pense du futur du Royaume-Uni et de l’Europe en ces temps troubles. Voici ce qu’il a répondu.

Implementation of rules: directives

Directives are in a sense the lightest form of EU legislation. As opposed to regulation and decisions, directives aren’t binding per se. The purpose of directives is to set a legislative goal that each member has to reach in the way that suits local circumstances the best. One could say that directives are the legislative instrument which combines the efforts of Member States and EU institutions the most.

European education system - where to start?

If students followed the same courses from Ireland to Greece, equal opportunity in the increasingly international labour market of Europe would be secured, she argues.

EU global strategy: concrete or irrelevant

Last summer EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and the European External Action Service she leads were tasked to craft a new global strategy for the European Union. The latest such strategy is from the year 2003. Even though the 2003 strategy was considered successful in its time, it has obviously grown outdated. In a "more complex, more connected, but also more contested world”, it is necessary to craft a new strategy.
